We Love to Say Hi and Buy Less We recently discovered this short TEDx Talk by poet Boonaa Mohammed. Its a great reminder to be kind and loving to others no matter the circumstances. There are some inadvertent nods to minimalism in Boonaas poetic speech. Race and Racism in Michelle Alexanders The New Jim Crow - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 904 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2019/02/05 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Racism Essay Did you like this example? ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crowâ⬠is a wonderful account on the revival of a racially biased society in the United States. Race is defined as a group of human beings distinguished by a common origin, shared habits, and interests or same physical attributes. Racism, on the other hand, refers to the discrimination against an individual based on their race. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Race and Racism in Michelle Alexanders The New Jim Crow" essay for you Create order Racism can be extended to include the belief that a given race has specific attributes which makes it superior or inferior compared to other races. This paper will seek to address race and racism by critically reviewing ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crowâ⬠by Michelle Alexander. Jim Crow refers to a section of the state constitution used to impose discrimination policies based on color, social class or family background. In that regard, members of the African-American community were not able to access equal social and political opportunities simply because they were believed to come from an inferior race. Though the Jim Crow sections of the state constitutions supporting racial segregation have been done away with, the current American legal system has changed to be ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crow.â⬠And so, African-Americans and other minority groups in the United States are made to serve unfair legal restrictions which undermine their privileges as American citizens. Despite many people believing that racial discrimination ended in the 1960s thanks to a number of civil rights movements, Michelle Alexander through ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crowâ⬠gives a picture of how government institutions are up to suppress the achievement of a one race society. The legal sy stem is not consistent in its administration of justice. ââ¬Å"The same supreme court that had ordered integration and encouraged civil rights legislationâ⬠was now ââ¬Å"bending over backwards to help criminalsâ⬠who were terrorizing black people (Alexander 42). Again, the shortening of jail sentences for African-Americans will not serve to improve the well-being of the color community, but constitutional amendments to eradicate partisan racial policies will prove significant in changing the American racial narrative. ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crowâ⬠puts into perspective the war on drugs and how it has been used as a tool to undermine the status of African-American citizens in the United States. It is a common assumption by members of the white race that all drug-related problems in the United States are making of the black community. The Drug Enforcement Administration, which is the trusted federal wing to handle the use and spread of dangerous drugs, has been pinpointing few individuals from the black community and criminalizing them with drug-related charges hence leading to increased numbers of black people in the American correctional facilities. For this reason, Michelle Alexander seeks to shade light and bring into public knowledge the vice of social stratification, where black people and members of minority groups are made to suffer for crimes they didnââ¬â¢t commit. ââ¬Å"The war on drugs offered whites opposed to racial reforms a unique opportunity to express their hostility towards b lacksâ⬠(Alexander 53). The book is aimed at mobilizing the civil rights fraternity to take action against a biased government system which is victimizing its own citizens on a color basis. The author is adding her voice to support a discriminated community by explaining to them how the system is working against them and informing them of the possible avenues through which lasting solutions to racial problems can be achieved. In addition, Michelle Alexander denotes racial history as an abandoned discussion among American households. Using the term race has been made to sound irrelevant in the United States, with many people believing that racial discrimination was a thing of the past while in a real sense it is still a common vice. ââ¬Å"Some discrimination would be conscious and deliberate, as many honestly and consciously would believe that black men deserve more scrutiny and harsher treatmentâ⬠(Alexander 105). Notwithstanding the milestone achieved in racial integration, the slaves brought in from Africa as a result of the slave trade are yet to obtain the status they desire in the American society. Sending their kids to separate schools doesnt conform to the norms and deeds of a healthy society and further limiting their economic opportunities only serves to undermine them rather than controlling social problems. The belief that all Americans are in a position to achieve what they dream is only true to some as ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crowâ⬠hinders them from securing nice jobs and accessing bank loans to startup businesses. The colorblind policies imposed by a biased legal system doesnââ¬â¢t give them the conducive environment required for personal development thereby poverty will for long be a black peopleââ¬â¢s crisis. In conclusion, the election of Barrack Obama as the first black president of the United States has not convinced Alexander Michelle that America has surpassed racial challenges. Importantly, the existence of economic and social barriers against people of color and other minority groups cannot be overshadowed by few achievements made by African-American individuals. The author doesnââ¬â¢t aim to revive racial antagonism but rather wishes to emphasize the need for equal treatment of all races in the United States. Race or social class should not be a determining factor when it comes to employment or administration of justice, therefore, ââ¬Å"The New Jim Crowâ⬠should serve as a mirror for Americans to see into themselves. Policy makers, legal practitioners, and politicians should not perceive the book as an attack on their side but a challenge to change towards establishing an all-inclusive society.

We will write a custom essay sample on Nations and Nationalities in Europe or any similar topic only for you Order Now S. Constitution, for democracies within Europe, the beginningsà are traced even farther back in timeà to embrace two different traditions. One of these traditionsà being the English Constitution primarily involving the Magna Carta, and the other traditionà revolving around the French Revolution. In comparing these two as to which has ultimately proved stronger as the base for popular rule andà why, one can discern that the French revolutionary tradition has accomplished this for two reasons.à The first reason being due to the fact of it being more recent in historical context. Such an importantà event having occurred less than 300 years ago has more relevance in the minds of many politicalà thinkers in our modern era than a similar event which occurred nearly 800 years ago. Mankind tendsà to believe that his ideas improve over time and thus the later the idea, the better the idea it is. The second reason for the French tradition being the base for most forms of popular rule today is dueà to it truly identifying and involving the three classes of the populace the aristocracy, middle-class,à and poor, back then as it does today, in the political and economic process of society. While bothà traditions sought to limit the power of the monarch from being absolute over its subjects, it was theà French revolution which gave a strong voice to those neither rich nor poor. The English tradition onà the other hand, primarily involved the nobility and the monarch, much like a dispute being settledà today between the millionaires on one side and the billionaires on the other. Today, like in the lateà 18th century during the time of the French revolution, in most advanced and developing democraticà societies, the vast majority of the citizenry fall in the middle. Thus, it is their political interests and à perspectives which influence political discussion and change, just as it didà nearly 300 years ago. North Korea Essays (5725 words) - Nuclear Program Of North Korea
North Korea The United States has been presented a dilemma towards its foreign policy with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). North Korea's alleged launch of a new Taepo-Dong I missile on August 31, 1998 has heightened American worries and escalated an already tense situation with North Korea. The United States response towards this new missile, which could possibly be able to reach the edges of both Alaska and Hawaii , will be a factor in its decision on whether or not to continue to finance support towards North Korea. New sanctions could mean the collapse of a weak North Korean economy. Already on the brink of economic and political collapse, the loss of U.S. and KEDO aid could push them over the edge and into political ruin. One major factor involved in the foreign policy decision is the collapse of North Korea. It could mean one of three things: Implosion (collapse of the state), explosion (war with South Korea) or absorption (reform and reunification). In May 1997, acting Director of Central Intelligence, George Tenet, stated, "One of the things that worries us most is an implosion internally." The result of an implosion, the collapse of the state, would be hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing to China and South Korea. China has already begun stepping up troops at the North Korean border to halt the flow of refugees should this happen. South Korea would possibly use force to deter refugees to the south. Another factor here is the humanitarian influences. Massive floods, droughts and typhoons since 1995 have forced North Korea to accept international food aid. Widespread famine has reportedly killed hundreds of thousands of people. This acceptance is contrary to the North Korean government's policy of "juche" or self-reliance . It is feared that the government of North Korea is diverting scarce food sources from the civilian sector to its military, even at a time of humanitarian crisis . A third factor is the general flow of our foreign policy towards North Korea. Since 1994, we have been implementing constructive engagement with North Korea. The Agreed Framework was a barter system where the United States would provide economic and food aid to North Korea. North Korea would cease production of nuclear weapons and they would make other concessions as well. Congress has recently called for the end to this. In a plenary session on September 18, the US Congress adopted a resolution, H.J. RES. 83, to call on President Clinton to stop implementing the U.S.-North Korea Agreed Framework reached in Geneva, 1994 . On September 17, Congress also passed a resolution to cut funding to KEDO. The State Department feels that constructive engagement is still the answer. Secretary of State press briefer James P. Rubin said, "We believe that if we can't fulfill our part of the agreement, it will be much, much harder to convince the North Koreans to fulfill their pat of the agreement. " This highlights differences within the U.S. government that may effect the outcome. Another factor is the North Korea military presence in northeast Asia. With increases technology in SCUD missiles and new longer range missiles being developed, North Korea is a source of instability in its region. It is one of the last Marxist regimes. Unlike the other communist countries' peaceful exit from the international scene, North Korea could strike out in desperation as they try to hold on to power as they slip out. North Korean military implications are important in two ways 1) the exporting and sales of missiles and technology abroad; and 2) the domestic stockpiling of troops and weapons along the De-Militarized zone. These two factors will effect the United States foreign policy to North Korea. Historical Context The United States has held virtually no relations with North Korea since the end of the Korean War. In response to the Korean War, the United States Government established severe economic sanctions towards N. Korea under the Trading with the Enemy Act in 1950. These sanctions and additional sanctions from the West caused North Korea to fall behind technologically to its neighbor, South Korea over time. Kim Il ?sung dominated most political and governmental affairs since the Korean War. Both as premier and president, Kim continued to press for the reunification of Korea (under the Korean Workers' Party rule of course). Domestically, he transformed Korea into one of the most repressive and strictly regimented societies in the world. The Korean Workers' Party dominated all aspects of life; police forces were also used to suppress the slightest dissent or opposition
